A club of industrials
The GRETh, Groupement pour la Recherche sur les Échangeurs Thermiques, has been federating a group of manufacturers of more than 100 manufacturers whose activities include the manufacture of heat exchangers and thermal equipment, engineering studies for thermal installations in industry and the building sector, and the operation of energy production and conversion sites. Most of the group's industrial members are led by the desire to develop or integrate innovative components, in particular heat exchangers, and develop advanced methodologies to achieve significant gains in the energy efficiency of industrial systems.
To support its members in their efforts, the GRETh has set up a support strategy and actions with these manufacturers within the framework of an original structure enabling carry out missions of collective interest, as well as specific services.
The GRETh carries out collective-interest missions made possible by the pooling of industrial memberships :
- technology watch to its members through the dissemination of scientific and technical results obtained from research and development programs in the field of heat exchangers and, more generally, industrial thermal systems;
- wide distribution of public information (thesis, technical reports, state of the art, patents... etc.), through various means ranging from conferences to a regularly updated website;
- connecting innovation actors (research institutes, industrials) through technical days and conferences;
- specialized training course engineers and technicians in advanced methods for designing and sizing thermal equipment;
- works and numerical calculation tools allowing you to deepen your knowledge and carry out calculations and dimensioning.
This approach is complemented by technical and scientific support to these industrial players within the framework of bilateral contracts that comply with confidentiality and liability obligations specific to technical consultancy assignments.
The feedback from this structure, dedicated to the technical and scientific needs of industry, enables us to assess the risks involved, but also the remarkable opportunities offered by innovation projects carried out in particular by small and medium-sized companies in the energy equipment sector.
This experience also shows the urgent need to develop and maintain structures with strong technical skills to provide effective support to industrial sectors.
GRETh's operating principle : Members decide!
The annual membership fee paid by each member creates a financial fund which is used to finance actions carried out by GRETh for the benefit of its members and in the scientific and technical fields that are its core business.
The Board of Directors, made up of directors elected by the Annual General Meeting from among the association's active members, helps define GRETh's strategic developments and orientations in the light of the needs expressed by its members. All the actions proposed by the Board are then put to the vote of the Annual General Meeting, which approves or rejects them. Once approved by the AGM, human and financial resources are committed and allocated to the priority actions that have received the most votes from members. Each year, the association's industrial members decide on the projects and collective actions to be carried out by GRETh.
Today, a limited number of companies can afford to have an R&D structure to carry out the innovation programs they need to ensure their long-term survival. The GRETh team has more than 30 years' experience in this field, provides a support interface for R&D engineers from member companies; it's an important part of his daily activity.
In addition, GRETh invests the bulk of its membership budget in resourcing knowledge, enriching databases, providing information and news on research and technology, making digital heat exchanger sizing tools available, obtaining preferential rates for training, and organizing the Journées Techniques du GRETh, which remains a key national event on the subject of heat exchangers.

GRETh Expertise
GRETh can be entrusted with any type of contract in the field of heat exchangers and, more generally, for all industrial thermal systems. (studies, tests, expert reports, validations, etc.), either from its members, or from any French or Foreign third party, institutional (especially EU), public or private, without positioning itself specifically in the competitive sector.
For GRETh membership, one day's service is taken into account, but for expertise requiring more time, invoicing is envisaged.
GRETh has already supported numerous research projects and is regularly entrusted with assignments such as : Search for documentation on a specific subject and produce state-of-the-art documents. GRETh, through its more than 30 years' experience in the field of thermics and the wealth of its own database, as well as a multitude of accesses to scientific databases, has access to a substantial bibliography and focused on the requested topic, such as research and conceptual development of test benches. |
GRETh's privileged links with industry (current and former members) and research laboratories mean it can find a host structure for test campaigns.
- Conceptual design of test bench architecture (general design, thermal loop, definition of geometric quantities, choice of heat transfer fluids/freezers, choice of technologies and auxiliaries, choice of measurement sensors and layout rules, quality control of the metrological chain);
- Development of test protocols ;
- Analysis and processing of results - Drafting of a summary report on the test campaigns.
In addition to supporting research programs, GRETh is regularly entrusted with expert appraisals on heat exchanger calculations, such as :
- Advice and assistance with exchanger technology selection for specific processes ;
- Performance verification on heat exchangers (All technologies: tubes and shells; plates and gaskets; finned coils, etc.) ;
- Sizing heat recovery systems (on liquid or gaseous effluents).
As a result, GRETh is entrusted with numerous missions relating to its know-how and the quality of its services.
