This week the aerogel-it team had the pleasure and honor of meeting IBIH CEO Dr. Yunhong Wang and Prof. Dr. Andreas Timm-Giel, president of Hamburg University of Technology, together with our longstanding collaboration partner Prof. Dr. Irina Smirnova, head of the Institute of Thermal Separation Processes at TUHH, to discuss aerogel products, developments and perspectives. Specifically the electrical vehicle (EV) market was a topic. Dr. Wang is a key member of the global #aerogel industry as well as a seasoned chemical engineering expert. He spent ~20 years of his life in Europe e.g. working for Lonza before founding IBIH in China around 5 years ago. Since then IBIH has strongly grown to become one of the largest aerogel suppliers in China as well as the largest supplier of aerogel heat shields for EVs 🚀 with well-known, heavyweight customers such as CATL and BYD. Fun fact: The majority of EVs in China (which are a lot) drive with aerogel heat shields produced by IBIH! The EV market is now seen as the largest future market for aerogels 📈 (see e.g. link to IDTechEx study in the comments). However, it seems that the global aerogel industry is simply not growing fast enough to meet the enormous growth predicted for the EV industry, and it is expected that aerogels will still be required for a while in EV batteries despite developments such as solid-state or LFP chemistry 🔋. Energy densities and safety requirements will keep increasing, and space-saving aerogel heat shields have already demonstrated their safety performance in real life - there was not a single fire with the EVs containing IBIH aerogel heat shields 🔥. But importantly, IBIH alone will not be able to cover this growing gap, and especially in Europe there is a serious lack of aerogel production capacities ⚠. Why should we celebrate the opening of EU's largest #hydrogen refuelling station, which is a VAMPIRE 🧛♂️ for the electric grid (+public money), with a 30% efficiency & costly refuelling? Look at the numbers 👇 According to the CEO of HYSETCO in the below interview this morning: ● the station produces 1 ton of hydrogen per day, enough to refill 200 to 400 vehicles per day, and refilling takes 3 to 5 minutes ➡ over 24hrs, the station capacity factor will be 50% if it refills #FCEV like the Toyota Mirai, that need 5kg of hydrogen for 500km ● refilling costs 100€ for 500 to 600km ➡ this is 50% more expensive than petrol for an ICE, 300% more expensive than a Supercharger for an #EV, 600% more expensive than home charging for an EV (prices for France) Hydrogen fuel stations should build AND pay for their own electricity generation, so that they are not the free-rider of the power grid anymore, wasting 2/3 of valuable electricity into heat losses. 💸 Subsidies and economies of scale will NOT change anything, electrochemical equations are clear about that. #physicsisthelaw Hydrogen Science Coalition + Paul Martin + Rosemary Barnes

⛽ #HysetCo opens #Europe's largest #hydrogen #station on the doorstep of #Paris: Europe's largest hydrogen refuelling station has been inaugurated at Porte de Saint-Cloud, on the edge of the Paris ring road. The main contractor, HysetCo, announces a daily production capacity of one tonne of hydrogen for taxis, buses and other public services. Well, let's just say. After having managed to align the agendas of all the politicians involved (Ademe, Ile-de-France region and City of Paris), Europe's largest hydrogen plant has just opened its pumps. It is located at Porte de Saint-Cloud, on the edge of the Paris ring road.
